Summer Studio

OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP 

 

This intensive two-day plein air workshop challenges students to translate foundational studio skills into the dynamic, changing environment of the outdoors. Through onsite painting, daily critiques, and individual mentoring, students will master atmospheric perspectives, rapid color mixing and efficient compositional planning. 
Painting a landscape while being in that landscape has a different kind of charm. It is a bit challenging too as we often get overwhelmed by the grandeur of the surroundings or sometimes we get lost by the feeling that we don’t know what to paint…how to start…We are going to troubleshoot all these together in this workshop! 

Aspiring artists of ages 15 and up will have the opportunity to develop artistic skills and vision to foster their creative expression. Expect a solid work and joy-filled workshop of landscape study, overflowing with sequential exercises, interesting experiences and experiments, and quite a bit of color theory. We will discuss and learn from examples of old and contemporary master painters. Learn or refine your skills using  wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry method. The instructor will work with everyone individually throughout the workshop and will draw and paint alongside the students.

Expect to go home at the end of the course with tools of a lifetime and couple of ready to hang paintings!

 

Students need to have prior experience of painting with their chosen medium (oil or acrylic).

For Acrylic painters:

ACRYLIC PAINTS
(Golden OPEN acrylic brand highly recommended. They stay wet longer on the palette, and still clean up with water. Regular heavy body acrylics are great too.

White: Titanium
Yellow: Cadmium Yellow light or Lemon Yellow, Cadmium yellow medium, , Yellow Ochre
Red: Cadmium red, Alizarin crimson, Burnt Sienna
Blue: Ultramarine blue, Cobult blue, Phthalo blue

Optional: Viridian Green, Chrome Oxide Green, Terre Verte, Lamp black, Mars black

 

BRUSHES
I use, mostly, synthetic flats and rounds. The “Princeton Real Value Brush Set’ is a good starting brush set
PALETTE KNIFE: a medium sized, trowel shaped metal palette knife, such as the Liquitex 119901 Professional Freestyle Small Painting Knife No. 1 or any other palette knife you have

SUPPORT
Canvas Paper is the best (most inexpensive way) for studying painting. Canvas paper is a heavyweight paper with a textured, coated surface that replicates the surface of canvas or linen. It comes in pads like drawing paper.
9X12 0R 11/14 inch canvas pad will work great for this class.

A small spray bottle

Paper towels or rags

painter’s tape
2B pencil

Palette (disposable palettes are great, grey are best but, white will do) If you have a palette you like, that will work.

For Oil Painters:

BRUSHES:

(variety of round and filberts or flats, make sure to include large brushes)

Palette knife for mixing

Medium (linseed oil or medium of choice) and medium container

palette cup -brush cleaner (Gamsol) and container (air-tight brush washer recommended)

thick paper towels/rags -plastic bag for collecting dirty rags -gloves

canvases. Please come prepared with at least 6 small/medium canvas.

Must have: Sunscreen, hat, water bottle, food/snacks and, good comfortable shoes, folding stool or chair if you want to sit, your painting supplies
Recommended: if you want to sit while we will be working outside, please bring a lightweight folding stool and trash bag to collect paper towels, rags etc. 
The Studio will provide: Easels for painters and canvas panels if you need them.
